Take the Salmon Taste Test
Submitted by Heritage Interpreter, Lina Kim
Did you know that from Victoria Day to Labour Day, salmon tasting is offered at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site?
Inside the museum, we offer a ‘taste test’ of two different types of species of salmon. Visitors are asked to compare the taste, texture, colour, etc., and pick their favourite type of salmon! Come to not only taste and compare, but to learn many interesting facts about canned salmon and salmon biology, such as:
- Did you know that some people choose to can salmon with the bones intact? This way customers can consume calcium from the salmon too.
- Did you know that Sockeye salmon live for four years while Pink salmon live for two years? Sockeye salmon is therefore fattier, larger, and redder since it swims in the ocean longer and consumes more krill than Pink salmon.
- Did you know that Pink is more sustainable than Sockeye? Since Pink salmon return to their homes and spawn every two years, they are more numerous than Sockeye salmon.
At the salmon taste test, we offer recipes and handy compact guides for sustainable choices that you can browse through and take home. Salmon tastings are held at 11:30am, 1:30pm, and 3:30pm (times may vary depending on programming). Try canned Sockeye and Pink salmon at the Cannery, generously donated by Gold Seal.
