Preparing for a New Exhibit!

plans for new museum exhibit

The next few posts in this blog series by the Society’s Youth Leadership Volunteer Hania, describes the process of the Exhibit Team’s planning and development of a new Cannery exhibit.

The Leadership Team is getting ready to reveal a detailed project that we’ve been working on to celebrate the Gulf of Georgia Cannery’s 125th anniversary. At the beginning of the year, all six students were working together and learning the ins and outs of the Cannery. Now, we have separated into three different groups that focus on separate aspects of leadership.

One of the groups is working on an exhibit, choosing a topic that was hand-picked by the team. The team went through the process for creating and planning a new exhibit, keeping in mind the audience that they’re reaching out to.

Part of the process included writing the text for the exhibit panels, trying to make it funny and creative, and appropriate for a fifth-grade level reader, to reach the widest audience. They also discussed the funding and need for translation of text panels into French, because the exhibit will be displayed in a federal Parks Canada site.  Finally, after getting everything ready and having the skeleton of the project in place, they met with the marketing team to discuss how to move on to the next step. We had a meeting to decide on how we wanted to present this exhibit to our audience.

Now it’s the marketing group’s turn to plan the promotion of this project and we’re learning a lot. For example, there are multiple aspects that need to be taken into consideration for different ages of targeted audiences. Marketing is not a simple task and requires a lot of thinking ahead which we are learning to do! Stay tuned to find out more about this exciting new exhibit.
