Opening Day at the Cannery Farmers’ Market

Our first of a series of blogs submitted by KPU practicum student Tyson D., who is assisting the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society’s marketing and event departments this fall/winter semester.

October 6th marked the first Cannery Farmers’ Market of the season at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site. A wide variety of local artisans and producers were present, including season-long featured vendors  Stephen’s Coffee, Ladner Artisan Chocolates, and Wander Natural Products.

Chef Ian Lai, Executive Director of Richmond Food Security Society put on an edutaining demonstration of the processes of fermentation and pickling, showing off his massive kombucha mother SCOBI, his two-year-old batch of miso, and more, all of which he made himself. Making your own kombucha or kefir has never looked so easy.

This market also happened to be the first for the Society’s new Event Coordinator, Julia Sargeant, who helped to guide the market and ensure things ran smoothly. If you’re like me and can’t wait for the next one, come and visit on October 20th for the next Farmers’ Market – admission to the Cannery is free on market Sundays, so come down and experience some of Richmond’s best!
