National Volunteer Week 2021

“The Value of One, The Power of Many” is the theme for this year’s National Volunteer Week. These words especially ring true in this past year of uncertainty, as many of us (including our volunteers) have had to work or contribute their time either from home or isolated (socially-distanced) on site. Yet with our collective efforts, we have been able to carry on in a safe manner and remain open to share the stories of our history and this site.

Our volunteer coordinator Tara Miller has written the following in appreciation of our very dedicated and appreciated team of volunteers.

The Power of Many creating a sense of community and protecting a national historic site for future generations.

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week April 18th to 24th , 2021, we acknowledge and thank our many Cannery volunteers.

Volunteering during this past year has looked very different compared to previous years and the Cannery volunteers have contributed in creative ways. From physically distanced clean ups to safely greeting guests, or volunteering from home, we appreciate the adaptability, support and contributions of every volunteer.

This includes volunteers who are not currently able to be on site, or because their roles will not return until after this pandemic. Their patience and continued commitment to the Cannery has been outstanding.

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society was founded by volunteers more than three decades ago. Today with almost 80 active volunteers who continue to contribute in every department. We are lucky to have such a wonderful volunteer crew and can’t wait to see everyone back on site when that is possible, again!
