Kids’ Guide to Steveston

Steveston is a wonderful place for people of all ages to enjoy. Some of the fondest memories of my own childhood were spent swinging across the monkey bars at Steveston Park or spending time watching the Oreo cows at Steves’ farm. Whether your goal is to create memories or relish in all the cute family moments, Steveston is the best place to be. After visiting the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and learning all about the history of the West Coast fishing industry, you can spend the rest of your day in Steveston at these local spots! 

• Fly a kite a Garry Point: Garry Point Park is known for having the most colourful kites flying high up in the sky. Check out Splash Toys’ abundant selection of kites! 

• Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site: After you come to the Cannery and learn about where people worked in Steveston, head over to Britannia Shipyards to learn about where people lived and how their boats were made. 

• Steveston Community Park/Steveston Tram: Steveston Playground, beside Steveston Waterpark, is a staple family-friendly part of Steveston. Bring your sunglasses, hats, water bottles and snacks for a full day of climbing and sliding. After you get all your energy out, check out the Steveston Tram museum beside the park and see how people used to travel between Vancouver and Steveston. 

• Fisherman’s Wharf: See all the cool things that our local fishermen have caught to sell at Steveston’s famous Fisherman’s Wharf. Depending on the time of year, you will see fresh or frozen, salmon, tuna, cod, shrimp, crabs, octopus and even sea urchin. 

• Steveston Waterpark: Cool off during the summer months with some aquatic fun and have a splash at Steveston Waterpark 

• Geocaching in Steveston: The Gulf of Georgia Cannery has two geocaches around the site, along with the many others already located in Steveston. To learn more about geocaching and the opportunities in Steveston, visit our blog post. 

• Splash Toy Shop: Splash Toy Shop is a family-owned business started in 1991 and is a staple of Steveston. The shop features classic retro toys, a wide selection of board games & puzzles, and all the newest must-have toys. 

• Whale Watching:  Steveston Seabreeze Adventures offers whale watching tours from April – October.  Join them for an exhilarating ride on their vessels which accommodate up to 23 passengers. You can choose from an open-style boat, a semi-open boat, or a zodiac-style boat for your whale watching adventure. Additionally, Steveston Seabreeze Adventures offers Sea Lion tours in the same styles of boat. Vancouver Whale Watch is also located in Steveston and offers similar boating styles for you to choose from for your experience. Vancouver Whale Watch emphasizes the importance of science and conservation while providing passengers with the adventure of a lifetime. 

• Oreo cows: Walk or bike along the dyke trail north of Garry Point Park to Steves’ Farm and see if you can catch a glimpse of their black and white Oreo cows (actually called Belted Galloways, but “Oreo” is more fun). Unfortunately, no real Oreos will be there, but feel free to keep the cows company while they are grazing on the grass by the river. 

• Steveston Village Maternity: Shop for babies, kids and maternity goods at Steveston Village Maternity. Find a comfortable outfit for mom or the perfect item for your child’s ever-changing needs. 

• Village Books & Coffee House: Village Books and Coffee House features both new and secondhand books, baked treats, warm drinks and a vast selection of kids’ books that are sure to amuse your little one. Don’t forget to check out the new Steveston Sweet Shoppe next door (opening soon). 

• 4Cats (Four Cats) Steveston Art Studio: Steveston Art Studio offers summer camps, classes, hosting capabilities for events and get-togethers as well as fall art classes for kids. Their program follows the teaching style of 4Cats, founded on building a world that loves art, beauty and learning.
