Fishermen’s Memorial – National Day of Mourning
Today, April 28th is the National Day of Mourning. Annually the community of Steveston gathers at the Fishermen’s Memorial in Garry Point Park to recognize the fishermen who have lost their lives doing their jobs. As the Fishermen’s Memorial can be seen both on land and from water, it acts as a reminder of safety for today’s fishermen who pass by the point as they move up and down river. This year, as we keep our social distance, we pause at home and turn our thoughts to those we have lost and whom we honour on this day. (Photo taken January 1, 2020)
